At work I use Visual SourceSafe for version control. It’s not what I want to use but it’s better than nothing… technically, I’ve been using nothing for the past month or so since my server has been taken offline but that’s another story. I would prefer to use Sourcegear: Vault. I had a demo of this and it was great but it costs money and my department’s budget is tiny. I’ve used CVS in the past and it’s ok… probably better than SourceSafe but not perfect. I’m working on some php scripts for a personal project so I went to sign up for a new CVS account at CVSDude. I’ve had a CVS account there before and it was perfect for a small project and it’s free for a basic account. I think you get like 2mb of space which isn’t much but is plenty for a bunch of php scripts. I knew CVSDude had added Subversion hosting so I decided to sign up for a Subversion account instead. I’ve played with it some in the past but never really got a feel for it. After using it for a few days now, I can actually say I prefer it to CVS. The ability to rename files and not lose history is worth it by itself. I’m using TortoiseSVN at both the office and home to access the repository. So far, so good.
